A powerful start to the year: Mercy Ships’ mission in 2025

In the first four months of this year, Mercy Ships has been present where it’s needed the most: in six African nations where access to safe, free, and quality healthcare is still a distant dream for many people.

Thanks to the tireless work of our volunteers and the support of people like you, we have been able to bring health, training, and hope to thousands of people—both aboard our hospital ships and through land-based projects.

Sierra Leone: A beacon of hope in West Africa

Since January, the Global Mercy has been docked in Sierra Leone, one of the countries with the greatest healthcare needs on the continent.
There, we have:

  • Performed 1,653 free surgeries
  • Served 1,127 patients
  • Trained 86 local healthcare professionals
  • Delivered over 3,915 hours of training

The ship will remain in Sierra Leone until mid-June. After a maintenance period in Cádiz, it will return to continue its mission in August.

Madagascar: Rebuilding lives in East Africa

In February, the Africa Mercy arrived at the port of Toamasina, Madagascar, where it will stay until the end of 2025.
In just two months of operations:

  • 517 free surgeries have been performed
  • 241 patients have been treated
  • 23 healthcare professionals have been trained
  • Over 1,375 training hours have been delivered

Transforming communities beyond the ships

Our work has also reached other African regions through onshore healthcare development programs:

Guinea Conakry

  • 226 professionals trained in dental care
  • Over 71,733 hours of training delivered
  • 6,994 dental procedures performed for 1,032 patients

Benin

  • 6 professionals trained
  • Over 3,300 hours of training

Guinea-Bissau

  • 6 professionals trained
  • 984 training hours

Togo

  • 12 agricultural entrepreneurs trained through the “Food for Life” program
  • Over 2,200 training hours
  • 128 ophthalmic surgeries performed

Your support makes a difference

Each of these achievements is made possible by people like you—people who believe that no one should be without access to safe surgery due to lack of resources.

We continue writing the story of 2025 together. Thank you for being part of this mission!

Mercy Ships follows the 2,000-year-old model of Jesus to bring hope and healing to those who need it most. You can join us by praying, donating, or volunteering aboard our hospital ships.
