“Orthopaedics” literally means “the straight child”. Surgeons perform procedures on children to correct congenital conditions such as clubfeet and bowed legs. In many cases these conditions can be treated using a special casting method eliminating the need for surgery or greatly reducing the extent of surgery required.
The Ponseti technique, developed by Dr. Ignasi Ponsetí i Vives over fifty years ago, is a series of casts that manipulate the foot gently into a more normal position. After the the treatment the the child usually only requires minor surgery to lengthen the Achilles tendon as they grow.
